Bedford Car Sales Down - Vauxhall Jobs at Risk

Thousands of jobs at two UK car plants could be at risk following a warning from General Motors that it is running on empty. The world's largest car company, which celebrated its 100th birthday this year, said it will be ruined within months unless it gets financial help from the United States government. General Motors, who own Vauxhall, employs around 3,700 workers at production centres in Luton, Bedfordshire and Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, which build around 215,000 vehicles a year.

According to the Daily Mail newspaper it needs something in the region of seven billion in cash each month to pay its bills. The firm has called off merger talks with Chrysler and was pleading with the US government for help. A spokesman for GM in the UK said "no reference had been made to jobs at the British sites and that discussions between car manufacturers and US officials were ongoing".

New car sales have been hit by falling demand across the world, with sales slumping to their lowest level in 25 years. New cars sold in the fell 23% in October 2008 compared to October 2007.

A number of UK-based manufacturers have scaled back production.
