W&H Peacock the well known and long established auctioneers hold weekly auctions in Bedford on Saturdays, St.Neots on Thursdays and also Lemmington Spa on Thursdays. Viewing is usually available two days before the auction takes place. The lots range from vegetables up to trucks with as much variety as would see in any classified ads section. The auctions themselves are great fun to experience. If you go there intending to purchase you will have to register and will be allocated a bidders reference number printeed in big characters on a plastic credit card size card. This number is yours to use as often as you like and simply points the auctioneers to your details in their register.

Bidding is easy but you need to have a strategy before you bid. Firstly you need to put a maximum price on the item you wish to buy. When the auction starts and your item comes up then don't jump in straight away. Most people wait until the auctioneer drops his initial bid request to a lower value. Then the fun begins. If you are successful you normally have a couple of days grace in terms of taking your item from the auction rooms. If it is a large item that won't fit in your car, someone will undoubtedly approach you with an offer to deliver the item to you for a fee. Worth taking them up on it usually but do haggle as the first price they offer is just a feeler.

All in all an interesting experience and one which you will want to repeat.
