Bedford Borough Council, as local planning authority; Renaissance Bedford, LDV, Internal Drainage Board for Bedford, flood water storage and drainage, Bedfordshire County Council, as strategic planning authority, and landscaping, Amey, By Pass design and management of appointed contractor, URS, risk and value management for landowner consortium, Woods Hardwick Architects, planning and design advice for landowners consortium.

Background: The Bedford Western Bypass links the A421 Southern Bypass at the Marsh Leys roundabout to the A428 Great Denham roundabout between Bromham and Biddenham via the existing link road. The new, £24m, bypass will unlock access to two of the major housing allocations west of Bedford, the Land West of Kempston and the Biddenham Loop, totalling 2,750 houses, with David Wilson Homes as the lead builder. It is forward funded by English Partnerships in a unique mechanism with the developer repaying on specific dates rather that against housing completion milestones. Carrillion is the lead contractor for the works and the road is scheduled to open for traffic by the end of 2009.

Progress: The construction continues to be on track.
