Bedford Charity Nears £1m in 2008

Last year grants totalling £830,796, were awarded by The Harpur Trust to organisations and individuals within the Borough of Bedford. Beneficiaries included London Road Community Action Group to help fund a Citizens Advice Bureau session held weekly for local residents. Also benefitting were Spurgeon's Child Care to assist with the running of contact centres in Bedford. The Alzheimer's Society's innovative music therapy project and their Mayday Trust to help refurbish residents' flats were also worthy recipients.
The Bedford Charity which runs the Harpur Trust Schools, and also sponsored John Bunyan School to become an Academy, has distributed in excess of £5.8m in grants in the Bedford area over the past ten years.
"The Charity is a major contributor to valuable community activities in the Borough and between July 2007 and June 2008 we gave 52 grants, amounting to £754,156, to local organisations and awarded £76,640 to local individuals" said David Russell, Chief Executive. "People tend to find out about our grants programme by word-of-mouth and with our annual grant making rapidly approaching the £1million mark we are eager to raise its profile so that as many local groups as possible are aware of its existence and consider applying for funding".
