Bedford Girls Schools are to combine

On 30th June 2009, the Harpur Trust announced that Bedford's two top girls schools, the Dame Alice Harpur School and Bedford High School will merge. The timescales for this merger have been set at between 3 and 5 years in order that girls currently studying for GCSE and A level exams will not be significantly impacted.

The decision was taken as a response to the dwindling number of pupils at the two schools. Each has a capacity of around 1000 girls, but currently only 1500 girls attend the two schools with numbers set to drop by a further 15% over the next 3 years.

As yet there is no news of a name for the new school, or a location. Various sites across Bedford are being considered, including the two current sites.

Girls have been educated privately in Bedford since 1882, when both schools were founded by the Harpur Trust. The merger would complete a full circle journey for the two schools, as they shared premises on Bedford High School's current site in Bromham Road until 1892. The Bedford Girls' Modern School moved to new premises in 1892, again in 1938, and then changed its name to Dame Alice in 1946.
Information meetings will be held in September at each of the two schools.
