Bedford Pub Awards - John O'Gaunt Inn Sutton

The East Bedfordshire branch of the "Campaign for Real Ale", CAMRA, have awarded the John O'Gaunt Inn at Sutton with the prestigious title of "Rural Pub of the Year 2009". Landlord Les Ivall was quoted as saying "I am really quite proud of this award" and rightly so.
The John O'Gaunt Inn is a community pub situated in Sutton in Bedfordshire. You enter this delightful village across a 13th century packhorse bridge or through a ford, which, with any luck, is still full of water. As soon as you walk in you realise that this is an old fashioned pub in the best sense of the word. There is an almost timeless feel to the place neatly encapsulated by the clock behind the bar which runs backwards. The pub was created in 1836 from three cottages which dated back to the 1700's. It was taken over in 2007 by Admiral Taverns and now has access to over 200 real ales.
The licencees, Les and Heleena Ivall, have been here for over 30 years and continue to serve excellent home cooked food (booking is recommended as this is not a pub/restaurant and food is not always available). The saloon bar, which is full of atmosphere, displays the village quilt assembled by local societies and village schoolchildren. The public bar holds a 130 year old skittles table, a dart board and a shove ha'penny board. The fabulous beer garden filled with rustic seating is set amongst apple trees and also contains a petanque court. The pub runs its own golf society and folk music club.
