The Hidden Job Market in Bedford

Another day dawns and you prepare yourself to face the task of job seeking by making coffee. The local Bedford newspaper drops onto the mat and you begin. Pencil sharpened and at the ready you carefully trawl through the "Situations Vacant" columns. You select all which have even the most tenuous links to your experience and qualifications. A lot of these jobs you suspect are already allocated to a friend of a friend, family member or former employee. If you think the only way to get a job is to know people, you may be partly right. With such a high demand for employment some jobs never make it to the paper. How can you compete?

Networking. Tell everyone you know that you are actively seeking employment. Some of these people can give you an introduction to their businesses if situations come available. They may also come across opportunities in other companies that they deal with. Their personal referral could tip the scales in your favour.

Be proactive. Use the local newspapers to identify companies which are growing their businesses, winning big contracts etc. These are the employers who will be looking for staff to sustain that growth. Approach all the companies in the area that you would like to work for and simply ask to speak to human resources. Enquire about current vacancies and future opportunities.  If you can't speak directly to them, send your CV in with a covering letter telling them why you are interested in working for them. Even if the response is "not at the moment" you do have an opportunity to follow up in a month's time and keep your name in their minds, but don't pester them!

Generally speaking, the more you put yourself about the better chance you have that people will think of you when an opportunity arises. If you don't do it you can be sure that others will. By staying one step ahead of other job searchers you can be sure that your new job is just around the corner!
